India to sell weapons to Philippines

India to sell missiles, aircrafts, etc to Philippines aims to triple its annual defense exports to $5 billion.

In recent developments, Indian defense companies, including Kalyani Strategic Systems, Larsen and Toubro Ltd, and Hindustan Aeronautics, are actively pursuing the sale of military platforms to the Philippines.

The Philippines, undergoing military restructuring amid intensified tensions with China, had previously acquired the BrahMos cruise missile from India in a deal valued at approximately $375 million.

The offerings from Indian defense companies range from protective gear to advanced fighter jets, with a particular interest expressed by countries such as Nigeria, the Philippines, and Egypt in procuring the Tejas Light Combat aircraft. According to HAL Chairman CB Ananthakrishnan, discussions are in progress, and while still in the early stages, potential deals could be finalized in the second half of 2024.

Reports suggest that officials from the Philippines have visited Indian defense firms to assess their offerings. While details are preliminary, there is a likelihood of significant agreements being reached in the coming months.

The foreign ministers of India and the Philippines have underscored the importance of defense cooperation in recent meetings. A joint statement highlighted various aspects, including interactions among defense agencies, the establishment of a resident defense attaché office in Manila, concessional lines of credit for the Philippines' defense requirements, acquisition of naval assets, and expansion of training and joint exercises.

India's collaboration with the Philippines extends beyond military hardware, with an emphasis on hydrography and maritime affairs. The joint statement acknowledges the growing significance of the maritime sector for both nations, fostering bilateral Maritime Dialogue and increased cooperation on hydrography.

As India aims to triple its annual defense exports to $5 billion by 2024-2025, these engagements with the Philippines mark a strategic step toward achieving that goal. The evolving dynamics in defense partnerships between India and the Philippines underscore the geopolitical shifts in the region, with both countries seeking to enhance their capabilities and strengthen bilateral ties.
