New rules for selling and purchasing SIM cards announced

The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has announced new rules regarding selling and purchasing SIM cards

Selling and purchasing SIM cards is going to get hard from December 1, 2023. The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has announced new rules to stop online fraud and make the online environment safer.

But what are the new rules?

Firstly, the telecom companies are required to register their partners, like shops and sellers, to make sure that they follow the rules. All the sellers will get a license and in case of any non-compliance, this license will be terminated or will be banned for three years. The ones already doing this have a year to start following the new rules. This helps to stop them from giving SIM cards to the wrong people or doing anything illegal.

Next, to stop people from using fake Aadhaar cards the demographic details will be compulsorily captured by scanning the QR code on the printed Aadhaar making the use of fake Aadhaar cards impossible and Digital Know Your Customer (KYC) has been made mandatory.

Also, if you discontinue a phone number a break for 90 days will be there before that number gets allotted to someone else.

But What if the SIM dealer does a fraud?

In an effort to stop defrauding activities by SIM dealers, the government has discontinued the provision of issuing bulk connections. A penalty of Rs 10 lakh will be imposed on dealers found violating the norms.

All these changes are to make sure SIM cards are given out and used safely, making the online world safer and cutting down on the chance of fraud.

Get ready for a safer and more secure online experience!
